Insurance for CAD & Drafting Services

Coverage for CAD drafting firms, BIM production teams and freelance drafters who prepare drawings for architects, engineers and contractors.

You may not stamp the drawings, but others build from them. A drafting error can still lead to a claim.

How Risk Shows Up in Drafting Work

Working under another firm’s stamp

The engineer or architect of record may look to you when an error traces back to the drawings.

Shop drawings

Fabricators and contractors build directly from shop drawings. Mistakes can mean rework and delay.

Offshore and remote teams

Work produced by subcontracted drafters still carries your name. Contracts should say who is responsible.

Typical coverage

The Stack Most CAD & Drafting Services Carry.

Scanners, drones and client files make equipment and cyber coverage matter.

Hover a layer to see what it covers. Every firm is different, so treat this as a starting point.

Why this matters

Carriers Don’t Always Understand What You Do.

Models, drawings and scans become the basis for someone else’s design and construction. Carriers do not always see that as professional work.

When the work is misread

  • Treated as a technology or software company, so your work may not count as professional services
  • Deliverables used by other parties in ways the policy never considered
  • Drafting under another firm’s stamp with no clear line of responsibility
  • Field scanning rated like construction

How we submit your firm

  • Your deliverables described clearly: models, scans, drawings, renderings
  • Who relies on your work, and for what, spelled out for the underwriter
  • Professional liability that fits technical production work
  • Contracts reviewed for who owns the design responsibility

Check the Contract First

Drafting contracts are often written by the client and push all responsibility down to you.

A short review can change that.

We also check that drafting is listed as a professional service on the policy.

Questions We Hear From CAD & Drafting Services.

Questions usually come from contracts written for architects or engineers and handed to firms that produce the models and drawings.

Answers are general. Your policy and your contract always control.

Ask yours on a 15-minute call
My client wants the native CAD or BIM files. Should I hand them over?

Start with what your agreement says about deliverables and reuse. Releasing native files can change how your work gets used later. If a client or their attorney is pushing, tell us early, because a demand like that can be worth reporting.

Does professional liability cover a model someone builds from?

Many policies can, when drafting or modeling is listed as a professional service on your application. Describe what you actually deliver. Gaps usually come from a description that is too narrow.

Do I need cyber coverage for client files?

If you hold client drawings, data or access to their systems, a breach or ransomware event can create costs professional liability does not cover. Some contracts now ask for cyber limits too.

The contract asks for insurance I don't have. What now?

Send it to us before you sign. We tell you what your current policies meet, what they do not, and what it costs to close the gap.
