Scaffold Law (NY Labor Law 240)
New York Labor Law Section 240, which requires contractors and owners to provide proper protection for workers doing elevation-related work and can make them liable when they do not.
What it means for your firm
The statute exempts licensed engineers, architects and landscape architects who do not direct or control the work beyond planning and design. That exemption does not remove liability under other laws.
Because owners carry this exposure, New York contracts often ask every project participant for broad insurance, including design firms. This is general information, not legal advice.
