AM Best Rating
A grade of an insurer's financial strength, like A or A++, plus a size class shown in Roman numerals, like VIII or XV.
What it means for your firm
The letter grade reflects AM Best's view of the insurer's ability to pay claims. The Roman numeral is the financial size category, based on the insurer's adjusted policyholders' surplus. For example, VII is $50 million to $100 million, and XV is $2 billion or more.
Contracts often require carriers rated A- VII or better. The rating is an opinion from AM Best, not a guarantee.
